never broken for you-the maxx by dholms never broken for you-the maxx by dholms
'It's wet.

Dark and wet.

It's the kind of weather that penetrates.
It makes your skin feel itchy and oily.
Dirty,...kind of.
But real too.

That's good.

It's time for Cheers.
Sam and Diane.
Norm Peterson. The Coach.
And then, after he died, Woody.

I don't have a tv now,...
but that's ok.

The shows in my mind are almost always better.'

-The Maxx Issue #1

----------

Very special thanks goes out to lockstock/vkacademy for her most excellant
stock. The particular pose I used was the catalyst for this piece.

Another big helping of thanks goes out to rl-brushes for her incredible brushes
which were instrumental (what an understatement!) in the creation of the border.

The font I molested was acquired from www.reticula.net.

Of course thanks goes to Sam Kieth for creating The Maxx and to Bill Messner-Loebs
for giving The Maxx a voice.

More than anything though, thank all of YOU deviants to whom words could never be enough,...
but,...
I continue boring you with them anyway.
;)

-d

ps-
I may get around to coloring it.
Hey! It could happen!

I actually don't recognize anything in this illustration except for the woman, but it still makes a lot of impact. Very nice composition and contrast.

heh.
so you're not a maxx fan i take it?
no problem man.
it was a comic published by the ground breaking group Image back in the nineties by sam keith.
later it was animated series on mtv's oddities. it was awesome as well.
thanks so much for the words!

It's hard to be a fan of something you've never heard of ;)

I've never been much into comics and never saw it on MTV.

Okay, that message wasn't completely fair. I can see a dream catcher and two muscular arms and fists with a big, boney index fingers. Apart from that it looks quite abstract to me.

Dude! The MAXX is one of the best comic series EVER! This drawing fits it sooo perfectly! Awesome line density and balance. It's almost Mucha-y.

I have his stuff all over-- I'm kinda obsessed. You shoulda seen me when a Czechoslovakian dude opened up a restaurant in our little town; he was impressed that I knew anything about their national treasure, but I think I was a little overbearing in my awe and reverence. Did you know Mucha designed their money? It made me hate our money even more than I already did. We should get Keith Haring or, appropriately, *Sam Keith* to design our money! How cool would that be?

Is there a higher resolution version anywhere? Id like to give colors a shot, but figure I should get the highest res possible... that is to say, I will anyhow, so long as there is no higher res available. That said, after I'm done, Mind if I put it up on my gallery if I link back here and credit you and Sam? ;D
Great work, one of the best renderings I have seen in a while, of one of the most iconic characters ever. Makes me want to break out the paper and veg out like the good old days.

Ah, Da' Maxx! This so takes me back to Maxx Traxx, I could so see this in the letter column.

As for "Advanced Critique", the feet look funny, are they suppose to be wrapped around the dreamcatcher?

Oh, and is Mr. Gone hiding in the feather down there? That tricky Mr. Gone!

uhm. to be honest, i did have one sketch in maxx traxx and one on the back cover of two issues.
as for the feet,...well,...those aren't the feet. heh. the feet are hidden behind him and the hill top. what you are seeing is my
stupid visual way of having the hilltop segue into some art nouveau design.
i think you're the first one to catch the mr. gone thing. good eye!

I've got the one of his own art, but not the one of other people drawing The Maxx. Way to go on getting the autographed card; I happen to have me a Sam Kieth autograph myself.... oh FUCK!! Actually I *don't* have that anymore. Y'see, I have a box of things that got thrown out due to my room mates stupidity, and every month or so I remember something else that was jammed inside that big box. Like right now. Anyway, I *had* a Sam Kieth autograph on the sketch book he sold through the internet. Dammit.

But tell me, what issues was your work in, I want to see it.

As for me, I've got the figure, the issue of Hulk he drew in the early 90s, almost all of his MCP covers, and I Before E #1 and #2. I use to have a comic with Wolverine and Jubalee from his MCP days that you could only get by sending in proofs of purchase to Charlston Chew. I *use* to have this way rare comic, but it got thrown out in that box too. Grrrrrrrrrr!!!! Fuck!
